Yes, it is weird to talk in a foreign language with people who speak your native language, especially if you've met them IRL and talked to them in German. I never know which language I should use to reply to their posts because there's so much to consider. For example: Would the part of their flist that doesn't speak German be interested in this discussion? And would someone not understand what we're talking about when we talk in English? It's confusing as hell.
I often get the feeling that Finnish fandom is behind English-speaking fandom in many aspects.
I used to get that feeling as well, but it doesn't really seem to be that way, because there are certain parts where German fandom isn't behind at all, while sometimes it is.
(And as I belong to a Swedish-speaking linguistic/cultural minority, I often feel like an outsider in the first place.)
Maybe you could try Swedish fandom? I know some people in German fandom are not from one of the German speaking countries but rather from Italy or Belgium, where there's a German speaking minority.
And it only gets worse when so many Finns are participating only in the English speaking part of fandom.

People in German fandom have, and there have been wanks about what language to use and what language is better for which fic and so on. I think the last one was a while ago, and I'm not really trying to rehash all the arguments made here, but it caused quite a bit of fuss that after a while, some Germans leave for the greener pastures of English fandom while some are left behind (It was not unlike the current LJ/DW discussions, actually).
