But anime are still watched subbed. I think it's rather universal that being able to consume a product in its original version is some kind of status symbol in fandom.

I think focussing on the terms is kind of silly. The little jokes don't matter much to me (I actually rather like the German "Winkelgasse" and prefer "Juxzauberstäbe" to "fake wands"). If the story and the feeling of the story are properly transported from one language to another, I'm happy. Those two things are more important than the single terms.

And sometimes the translator actually inserts jokes were there weren't any in the original version while some others are left out. We had an excellent example of such a translation in a course on pharaseology in German and foreign languages once.
