I still consider it German fandom, though, we are all German speakers, but we just interact with everyone else in English. If that makes sense.
It does. frogspace uses the same definition, but my definition of German fandom is the one used in those circles you didn't frequent (and it's not quite as anime/manga heavy anymore, not since Harry Potter came along). And that means people who consume/produce/discuss in German (not exclusively, but that is the definition used in the German fandom circles I am used to), while English fandom is a fandom in which fans consume/produce/discuss in English. Not exclusively either, but ...
I had the same problem the one time I wrote a Buffy story in German. I just didn't know what vocabulary to use, because I'd never seen Buffy in German.
That's a problem, especially in fantasy fandoms. I haven't read the seventh HP book in German yet, but I'm writing a fanfic set afterwards and I want to use the German terms, not the English ones. I rely on research and my betas. Curiously enough, some German HP fans resolutely refuse to use the German translation of any name or specific term.
I think I made up my German translation of "sonic lipstick" for my Sarah Jane Adventures/James Bond crossover ficlet and I know I translated the dialogue for my Heroes ficlet. There was no official translation everyone was used to, which made it easier, if you can believe it.
