He's mostly talking about samurai films and whether or not samurai films are entirely Japanese or just Western influenced. He thinks he's clever by taking a position somewhere in the middle, which might be somewhat revolutionary for film studies, but is anything but for me. I guess he should start reading about Japan (and especially Japonism) outside of a film studies context. He certainly isn't addressing any of the criticism of the issue. I have the suspicion he didn't understand the criticism at all.
