He's mostly talking about samurai films and whether or not samurai films are entirely Japanese or just Western influenced. He thinks he's clever by taking a position somewhere in the middle, which might be somewhat revolutionary for film studies, but is anything but for me. I guess he should start reading about Japan (and especially Japonism) outside of a film studies context. He certainly isn't addressing any of the criticism of the issue. I have the suspicion he didn't understand the criticism at all.

They also talk about how samurai films and Westerns are alike in the forum. I'm somewhat confused what all that has to do with the article.
