I know exactly what you mean with the vocabulary. My biggest problem is horse related stuff. Lots of special vocabulary that I've known since childhood in German, but don't know anything about in English.
I had the exact same thing happening with parseley. I think the reason I have known it was a herb for a long time was the song "Parseley, sage, rosemary and thyme" by Simon & Garfunkel. Rosemary and thyme were quite obvious to me, but I never bothered to look up the others. I only learned very recently what parseley is. (And I love parseley, so it was quite a heureka moment. *g*)
Re buttercup: Butterblume for me is Hahnenfuss, not Loewenzahn, and for my boyfriend, too. (We both grew up in B.) Seems like Wikipedia is not quite right?
