So, in between weird health problems that the doctors can’t figure out, I’ve recently become completely obsessed with a new (older) TV show, because of course my brain picks this moment in time for it. Anyway, the series is ten years old by now, and there’s barely any fic, but I absolutely loved Banshee.

Banshee focusses on a character only known as Lucas Hood, an ex-con who assumes the identity of a dead sheriff when he enters the small town of Banshee, looking for his ex-girlfriend and the diamonds he went to prison for fifteen years ago, only to discover that she’s married with two children. While he tries to keep undercover in his new identity, he has to content with a suspicious deputy, an ex-Amish gangster and his niece, as well as an assortment of criminals and, most importantly, his ex-girlfriend’s mobster father, who has a score to settle with both of them…

So, I absolutely love this series because of the main character, since Lucas Hood is almost exactly my kind of woobie (the only complaint I have is that they could have gone a little lighter on the PTSD) – an asshole woobie who gets beaten up constantly (not an exaggeration), who has a very tragic and shady past and who can be kind of unhinged and self-destructive. I also love a lot of the other characters, though. I initially picked up the series because I was interested in Job, the fabulous cross-dressing hacker who is one of Hood’s best friends/accomplices, and he’s wonderful too. Other things I loved are: Hood’s and Ana/Carrie’s complicated relationship and deep love for each other even when they’re with other people, Hood/Carrie/Job/Sugar working together on jobs. Hood being kind of a terrible sheriff even though it’s obvious he loves the job, and the deputies we meet throughout the series (the last one to appear – an ex-nazi played by the guy who played Ward in Iron Fist – being the fan favourite).

You should watch this series if you like: woobies getting whumped (there’s a lot of that to go around), Antony Starr (Homelander from The Boys), characters who try their best but don’t necessarily do the right thing, extremely shady morals, us-against-the-world relationships

You should not watch this series if you don’t like: violence (including torture, sexual violence, racialized violence, protagonists being violent, police violence, very graphic violence), lots of on-screen sex, cheating/promiscuity

PSA: CopyrightX

If you haven't heard about it, CopyrightX is an online course about American copyright that is offered by the Harvard Law School. It's free, open to absolutely anyone over the age of 13, who can pass the English test in the sign-up and who has an internet connection that can deal with a Zoom conference. It lasts for several weeks from late January to May, and it's 1 Youtube lecture, 1-3 readings and one 90 minute Zoom meeting (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, depending on what timeslots you're available for) per week, and it's more or less like a university course. At the end, you can even take a voluntary exam and earn a certificate. More information on the sign-up page here:

I did it this year, and I thought it was super fun! Don't worry if you're not a lawyer and not from the US. If you're interested in US copyright and would like to take a deeper look at it, or just if you think it might be fun, you could give it a try.

Mid-August Thoughts

In an effort to get a bit more active again, here's some short, random thoughts and things:

♠ dawn_felagund wrote something really interesting about how the AO3 affects fannish infrastructure, especially single-fandom-archives: Library of Moria and Fanfic Walmart. It's really thoughtful and doesn't condemn the AO3 so much as put a spotlight on how our laser focus on one archive ends up giving us less options, in some ways, even though it was created to give us more. (Thank you vriddy for spreading the word!)

♠ OMG! Someone is requesting Carnival Row in exchanges!!! I might have some huge life changes coming up, but pending that throwing a wrench in the works, there might be a treat in it for you!

♠ And while we're on the topic of Carnival Row, I picked up my WIP from last year again and typed up all the drafted (which I like to do by hand, unless it's exchanges) chapters, drafted 1½ scenes and worked out how long the story is going to be and what I want each chapter to do: 17 chapters, which at my usual chapter length would put it somewhere at 70k. I'm going to try and finish it, guys. I've got 20k already. But I'm a super slow writer, and prone to get distracted and wander away, never to pick the fic up again. There's a reason the longest fic I ever finished is 23k which were written in a month. Wish me luck, guys.

♠ I also have a short Carnival Row oneshot planned that is very likely to actually get finished - drafted, at least. It'll eventually end up on my beta post where I collect all the fics I'm currently looking to get betaed (minus the ones for exchanges). Current fandoms: Warrior (2019), Game of Thrones and Mass Effect: Andromeda, plus three fics in German for Highlander and Babylon Berlin.

So, I really like Canon Divergence AUs, and this fandom needs more of them. This one is my favourite, though. It diverges pre-canon, actually, with the rebellion of Ning Yi’s father failing. I really liked the bits where Feng Zhiwei plots and schemes against her crazy family in a way that shows being royal just royally sucks.

A Holidays and 2021 Retrospective

So, fandom-wise, most of 2021 was a bit of a miss for me, with fandomgiftbox folding, me being really busy all of a sudden in RL and, you know, everything. But the past month really turned the year around for me!

♣ I participated in getyourwordsout last year and actually managed to meet my (low, but I’ve never been terribly prolific) word count target in November, thanks to NaNo (which I won again)!

♣ Through holiday_wishes, I got DW paid time (thank you so much, anonymous people!) and a couple of post cards that I really enjoyed. I hope the ones I sent made it to their destinations safely as well. For some reason, sending and receiving holiday mail always makes me happy. Also, again, thank you so much, people who offered to beta some of the fics I'd thought were doomed to linger in the drafts folder forever.

♣ In an effort to be more active in fandom again, I’ll try to participate in the snowflake_challenge this January. I already did the first challenge and updated my info.

January so far has been a weird month. It started with a week of respite from my mother's crazy alcoholic friend, who finally agreed to go into detox on January 1st. She's out now, but so far she hasn't relapsed. Also, my daily dose of bupropion has been doubled and it's starting to work, kind of. I have more of a drive than before but unfortunately no interesting things to do. I guess I'll have to start tidying up soon. I already managed to read four books and if I continue like this, I'll be through my unread book pile soon(ish).

One of these books I'd like to rec: Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino. I really liked it and it spoke to something in me - most likely because I know what being a failure feels like. The first person POV takes a bit getting used to, but it's amazing how unreliable all the narrators are and in the end, you have no idea what is truth and what imagination. The novel is also based on a real life murder case, which was why I initially bought it. Well, that and the fact that I already read Out by the same author and liked it. Her books are focused on women in Japan, or more precisely why it sucks to be a woman in Japan.

Fandom-wise, I have been reading a lot of Hobbit genfic (and started a lot more that were labelled gen but turned out not to be gen at all), mostly about the family of Thorin, Fili and Kili. When did my id decide that fluffy family fic was it for me? I have no idea, but there you go. I've been thinking about writing some myself, but a) I don't have any specific ideas and b) I would have a lot of trouble writing Fili. I know the actors of all three dwarves from other series, but most of their roles don't cause any confusion. Dean O'Gorman, on the other hand, plays Anders/Bragi in The Almighty Johnsons and is just so awesome at that, it left quite an impression. For some reason I think I wouldn't write Fili as Fili but as Bragi, and I don't think Fili would be quite in character as a womanizing jerk.

Yuletide Recs and Hobbit Mania

Fucking dwarves. Seriously, I should have expected it. LotR did not make me super fannish, despite the fact that I loved the books (and Aragorn, and Eowyn and Faramir ...), probably because the elves just didn't do it for me and from afar it always seemed to me that the fandom was hardcore about elves. The only thing I shipped was Legolas/Gimli, but when I mentioned that once the reaction was pretty much "gross". So of course now I am ridiculously invested in these dwarves. My favourites die in the end. I didn't like the book. I don't have time for it, but still, I am rapidly sliding down the rabbit hole no matter how much I try to stop it. Yuletide and other Christmas stuff

Okay, so I promised photos - which I was about to post when the memory chip of my new camera malfunctioned. Lesson learned, the new one cost four times as much as the old one and has a proper warranty. Also, I bought myself a present: a puzzle. 3000 pieces and I am making progress, but now I also have sore muscles in my legs (yes, I know, I am the least sporty person ever). Other than that, it has been an okay Christmas so far, although that might change because of my mother's CAF, who might or might not visit and might or might not whinge at us for the rest of the day.

ETA: Okay, CAF did not visit but did whinge and ruin the day.

But on to other things: Yuletide! This year's experience was pretty much a lesson in "never doing that again". I didn't get around to properly work on the story until the last two-ish days before the deadline and the story got so freaking long, I barely managed to finish and upload the draft before the deadline. The editing was done during the next two days. Unfortunately, those days were the first of my period and by the end I had the worst brain fuzz since I started taking my meds. Until about yesterday evening, I was pretty much out of it and on pain pills for a head ache that wouldn't end. And all that for a story in a fandom of two. I hope my recipient appreciates the work, although it could have been better had I actually been running at more than 30% brain capacity. Hopefully, I learned my lesson.
