WIP Update #4

Yeah, so, this has been what can only be called “a week”, so not that much progress:

Drafted chapters: 17/17 ✓
Typed up chapters: 17/17 (76,999 words)✓
Edited chapters: 7/17

No progress since Tuesday, since that’s when I started a four-week internship that’s kind of demanding, mentally, but fun. Eight hours of work plus two and a half hours of commute don’t leave you with that much time for editing when you’re also swamped with household tasks (my mother still isn’t back because she’s still Covid-positive and thus doesn’t want to expose others to her germs), doing canon review for Yuletide (another one to two hours a day) and when everything that can go wrong does go wrong (just got back from failing to get groceries because the car broke down midway through my errands, lost my phone charger earlier this week…)

But hey, I learned how to write a super simple Python program this week, and the place where I intern is really cool, even if I’m interning in the very unglamorous IT department. Also, I’ve got great neighbours who absolutely will watch out for packages arriving for you and who will come tow your car when it breaks.

Thanks! My neighbours are awesome! My mum will come back tomorrow, even though the test still showed a very weak positive result today, but hopefully she won't be infectious anymore. And the internship is super interesting so far.

I'm trying to catch up on my dwircle a little. (I say, as if need to somehow apologise for leaving a comment to a post from three days ago. Heh.)

That's an impressive number of words to have written! Which fandom are you writing in? For that matter, which fandoms are you in currently?

This fic is for Carnival Row, which is more or less a fandom of three or four, as far as fic is concerned. But I'm also eagerly awaiting the next season of Warrior (the 2019 series) and love Andor. Other than that, a lot of Korean dramas, basically. So, teeny tiny fandoms, except for Andor, maybe.

It's especially impressive then, writing a long fic for a tiny fandom! Kudos!

I'm not familiar with any of those fandoms. I do occasionally watch K-dramas, but I don't think I've ever read fic for any of them.

Not so impressive if you consider that the only thing that motivated me was getting something long and meaty to read. Nobody else was going to do it for me, so what was I supposed to do? Mope?

Yeah, for most dramas I also don't crave fic. But every so often, you find one where you'd like to read all the fic, and there's very little there. I think with dramas, most fans move on to the next one rather than spend some time in the fandom, since drama fandom is less about the source canon and more about dramas as a whole.

Write what you want to read; I suppose in a way that's the main motivation to write any fic, at least for me. Sure, there's tons of fic in my current main fandom for my current fave ship, but so few of them have the characterization that I want. Which is how I've ended up with the partial outlines and snippets for several fics after about a decade of not writing anything. We'll see if I'll ever complete anything. I remain hopeful.

Snippets and a lot of stuff that just ends up in your virtual drawer is how it started for me as well. If you've still got ideas, there's definitely a chance they'll eventually coalesce into a fic.
