Drama Recs #14
1. Captivating the King: When the King’s brother Lee In returns to Joseon, he has few friends but many enemies. The only person he grows close to is Kang Hee-soo, disguised as a man. They bond over their love of baduk, but then an intrigue starts to unravel that leads to Lee In betraying his only friend… So, what I really love about this show is the friends to enemies to lovers plot, where both of them are fighting against each other and their feelings, but in a rather subtle way. I also enjoy both main characters being rather competent schemers who run circles around everyone around them. Plus, both main actors are really great!
2. House of the Owl: Legendary fixer Ohgami Ryutaro is about to retire at the age of seventy, but then he is asked to hush up the death of a politician’s son, and in the ensuing political battle, enemies are closing in on not only him, but also his troubled family… so, fair warning, this series ends in a way that really makes you hope there’ll be a second season, because what there is so far is the opening act, but it was one I really liked! It’s a good mixture of political manoeuvring and family drama, with each of the Owl’s four children having their own personal problems to deal with – even if they might not be that personal after all.
3. Knight Flower: Jo Yeo-hwa has been a dutiful widow for fifteen years – except at night, when she sneaks out to help the less privileged as a Joseon Robin Hood. On one such outing, she runs into Park Soo-ho, a diligent new guardsman with a dark secret in his past… okay, so this series is just straight up cute. All the characters except the obvious villains are lovable, Yeo-hwa is the perfect cool dark vigilante (and a cute, long-suffering daughter-in-law), Park Soo-ho has the best sad puppy dog eyes, his older brother and his long-suffering sighs are great, and honestly, just, it’s fun and engaging and, dare I say, remarkably wholesome in the best possible way.
4. My Man Is Cupid: Five hundred years ago, Cheon Sang-hyuk – a cupid – got hit by his own arrow fell in love with a court lady, which ended in tragedy. Now every woman he catches feelings for is destined for a horrible fate. Until he meets Oh Baek-ryun, who has a similar effect on the men around her… so, this was a really fun series, mostly because I just loved Oh Baek-ryun, who got one look at Sang-hyuk and decided that he’s it, until she finally managed to wear him down. And then there’s the ugly cupid, whose story I also really liked. Oh, and there’s a serial killer running around, tying everything together.
5. A Shop for Killers: When her uncle – her only family – dies suddenly, Jeong Ji-an returns home to bury him, only to find out that there was much more to him than she knew, and that there is now a host of killers after her and her inheritance… A really good action series with an excellent cast – you can’t really go wrong with Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-jun. Some other things I liked: the setting for the action as very limited and I loved seeing it change with every battle. The actors for the villains were excellent as well, and while I could predict all the twists, they were still satisfying. (Also, Jin-man is a great uncle, in his own unconventional way.)
Also, in hedgehog news: Zumi finally woke up and is currently adjusting to the great outdoors in a larger pen underneath the apple tree.
