The Bible & ontd_startrek

☞ Since I finished the first of my long reading projects last month (an abridged version of The Canterbury Tales), I started reading the Bible again. Just, you know, because it's part of our culture and all. I stopped somewhere in the Second Book of Moses (Exodus) the last time, because it's very, very boring. And I refuse to skip books. Anyway, I started with the ten commandments again, and read a few pages. I learned quite a few things: 1) If you beat up your slave and he doesn't die immediately but a few days afterwards, you won't be punished. 2) There are only three things listed under "offenses punishable by death" in my version (being a witch, having sex with animals and sacrificing to other gods). There are a lot of crimes you can be executed for, though. 3) God is weirdly specific when it comes to interior design. In fact, he goes on about it for several pages.

☞ ontd_startrek seems like a funny comm, but I really shouldn't follow any links there. My computer has less problems with InDesign, even though I don't have the RAM, the processor and the space on my hard drive that it requires. *sigh*

☞ Does anyone other than me watch Kings? I like the series, despite the fact that certain parts of it are rather problematic.

I've tried reading the Bible a couple of times, too, but science, it really is boring :o)

Kings is not on here, so no.

Hey, there are interesting parts. Lots of bloodshed and sex, or so I've been told. And Genesis isn't that bad either.

I watch Kings, it's really interesting. I loved the Jack bits in the latest episode!

Yeah. I was really afraid that they'd turn him into a villain, but so far he seems mostly ambiguous, which I love.

Yeah, me too. He seems a lot more interesting than David.

Hmm, I think David has potential too (mainly when it comes to him being torn between his family, his love, his king and his duty), and I don't mind him and the romantic plot, which happens to me quite often with other series.

But as a character, he really isn't as interesting as Jack.

He has potential, yes. But I find him kind of... boring.

I'm in the middle of reading the Bible--have been for several years--and I'm stuck on Kings, because it's so boring. I, too, refuse to skip books.

Yeah. There are interesting bits. I liked Genesis, at least there was action. And I'm really looking forward to Leviticus.

I never read the Bible. I tried to read the Koran once but gave up because it was a) boring, b) incomprehensable without a lot of background reading.

I still watch Kings even though the long break diminished my interest a lot.

One of my uncles read both the Bible and the Koran - and can quote even the weirdest and most obscure passages. I respect him a lot.

I agree, the break wasn't a good idea, and the episode after wasn't all that interesting either. I liked the latest episode, though.

I've recently discovered this course about the Old Testament (you can watch the class sessions online or read the transcripts). It's very interesting and gives a lot of background information which is useful for understanding the Bible.

Hey, you couldn't know. It's really hard on my poor old computer, though. He wasn't even the best you could get when I bought him in 2004.
