LJ Strikethrough 2007
2007-05-31 01:05 amWell, apparently it's time for hysteria again. It's a bit of a shame, really, because I had the feeling these endless (and fruitless) discussions about shota/chan and so on were more or less settled.
But it's not as if I did not see it coming at all. After all, this isn't the first fandom purge in history. It does not make it any less annoying and stupid, however. People in fandom don't support paedophilia. Why don't people get that? Nobody would protest if the "victim" of the purge were just communities promoting child pornography. I guess most of us would even applaud. But writing about two teenagers falling in love, and doing so rather explicitly, is not child pornography, and I still don't understand why people react in a similar way when it comes to incest in stories. It's just fiction anyway, and even though I don't particularily like it, I don't see why it would be oh so horrible.
And unsurprisingly, the recent hysteria annoys me more than those of the past. The reason is quite simple: I like it here on LJ. I did not really participate in fandom until I got my journal, and I liked it that much, I even got a paid account. I just don't want to migrate again. I'm attached to my journal, and because I am a creature of habit, I'd rather not move someplace else.
Hopefully, in a few days, people are going to be calm enough to paint a clear picture of what happened. There are so many rumours, and most of them are probably not true.

Fandom Wank on the Topic
Edit:
A lot of people react by taking slash and other related words off their User Info. I won't do this, because if they felt the need to delete users who like slash, I would not want to stay anyway.
Edit 2:
LJ staff finally posted a statement. Now let's wait and see. Personally, I think LJ lost quite a lot of support from the fan community.
Edit 3:
Looks like it's time to celebrate!
pornish_pixies and a lot of other communities and users were unsuspended. Fandom rocks, and I am quite glad to be a part of it at the moment.
