  9. Lick Your Wounds and Get Up Again. Fandom: Warrior (TV 2019). Length: 1519 words. Rating: T. Set immediately after S3 - unexpected guests turn up on Bill O'Hara's doorstep.

  10. Web of Fate. Fandom: Carnival Row. Length: ~77,000 words. Rating: M-E. A post-S1 AU focussing on Jonah and Philo. It's a gen/het mix with explicit-ish sex scenes (Philo/Vignette) but an overarching gen plot with lots of worldbuilding. I'd really love to know if the plot works, most of all, since it's my first fic of this length and type.

So, I was a bit too busy to keep up with my reactions through the week (turns out I have to learn a lot of technology stuff I am not the least bit interested in right now, like which bus does what and what the difference between SRAM and DRAM is), but I did manage to keep with the new episodes. My reaction, from what I gather, is more positive than most people’s (hence me having noped out of Reddit and general discussion), but it’s not altogether positive, and some aspects I really don’t like.

Generally speaking, the second season, especially the middle, needed more time to breathe, and the characters and relationships needed more time to move in the directions they went. So I understand why people complain, but to me at least, the overall trajectories made sense, at least in theory. I also appear to be one of the few people who like the Pact-related world-building we got, and didn’t think the series demonized communism or something. I actually really appreciated that we got to see the fae react in different ways to different types of oppression some more this season.

I just really wish it hadn’t been so rushed, especially around the middle, with Jonah and Sophie – they deserved at least two more episodes to end up where they did! And the case could have needed some more work.

The one thing I really, really didn’t like was the Vignette/Tourmaline ending. Not because I ship Vignette/Philo more (although I do) – I liked Philo’s ending, including him being alone. And not because I wanted Tourmaline to end up with Darius either (she clearly wasn’t into him in that way). I just absolutely loved Tourmaline’s take-down of Vignette’s personality when she shot her down at first, because it makes Vignette a very interesting character to me and explained a lot about her behaviour. But also, Tourmaline deserves better than her because she’s the best, especially since the series didn’t put in the work to show me that Vignette had changed. I read somewhere that they cut out some stuff that would have made it poly, and honestly, I’m not really into poly pairings, but this would have been one situation where it would have actually worked, and I’m sad they had to cut down so much.

Things that I liked in general:

Berwick (I do need to write a fix it for him, don’t I?)
Kaine (especially the Philo and Kaine team-up!)
Darius and Tourmaline and Darius and Philo!
Runyan being out of his depth in politics (and going back on the road with his kobolds at the end)
Philo grappling with his identity
Agreus and Imogen’s ending

So yeah, I kind of dropped of the face of the earth there for a while and just barely managed to finish my assignment for Candy Hearts. The reason was basically a lot of stress related to trying to get into a retraining program so that I might finally get a job eventually (started this week, but they made it more complicated than it had to be for sure) and the health problems that caused. Namely, mystery heart arrhythmia. My heart is fine, apparently, as is my thyroid, so everybody’s best guess is that it’s stress plus my period (because my body hates me and I’m basically trouble free when I ovulate).

Anyway, new season of Carnival Row! Really like it so far, in sum. I think they kind of bungled the Philo/Vignette transition in the third and fourth episodes, not because it didn’t make sense for the characters, but because it felt like there was something missing there. Maybe some scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. But apart from that, I really love it, especially the Darius & Tourmaline stuff and also the scenes between Sophie and Jenila. I also wasn’t super into Imogen/Agreus in the first season, even though I liked them well enough, but I’m warming up to them now that they’re in an established relationship, dealing with some of the trouble that means for them. I think that’s because I generally prefer established relationships, or at least relationship troubles past the getting together part. Also, happy to see Jay Ali (what are the odds he’s the killer?) I even enjoyed the bit with Dombey in episode four – I just love how much of an asshole he is.

Okay, it was really hard to choose which of my fandoms to advertise, since almost all of them are tiny, but for this post, I’m going with Carnival Row, since the next season is finally going to come out next month.

What is Carnival Row: It’s an eight-episode (so far) TV series by Amazon which focusses on Inspector Rycroft Philostrate, a policeman in The Burgue, a city that finds itself an unwilling refuge for fantasy creatures of many different kinds, leading to all the usual tensions between the newcomers and the humans. The plot kicks off when Philo’s old flame arrives in the city as a refugee and Philo gets drawn into the investigation of a series of murders that is far more dangerous than it seems at first.

Why you should watch Carnival Row:
  • Philo (as played by a scruffy Orlando Bloom) is an A+ stoic woobie.
  • The world building is really interesting, even if a lot of it is only touched on in passing. It’s a fantasy series, but it focusses on a London-inspired city circa 1900.
  • some wonderful minor storylines that get some screen time, such as the cross-species romance between an upper-class lady and a faun, an actor and his troupe of kobold actors, and the Chancellor’s disappointment of a son getting some development.
  • Not (just) your usual fantasy creatures: it’s fairies, fauns, centaurs and giant trolls, and unlike with other storylines about oppression and fantasy races, the other races’ differences don’t pose an inherent threat to the humans at all (which can sometimes make it seem as if the oppression is justified).
  • A solid mystery that I, at least, found rather satisfying.
