It is January, which means it’s time for the Snowflake Challenge – and time for my yearly reminder to update my profiles. There wasn’t really much to update for me, profile-wise, so I’m going to write a bit of an update on what’s going on with me, since I’ve been rather silent in the last couple of months:
► Zumi still isn’t hybernating reliably. She slept a couple of days after Christmas, finally, but apparently decided that she really wanted to show
sevilemar her lovely snout when she visited, and then there was New Year’s…
► I had a big exam in December (results pending, but I didn’t have time to study at all and it showed…), and there are a couple more (even more important ones) coming up this year that I am not looking forward to. The first is in late February, and it’s already stressing all of us out.
► I won NaNo (despite the hell that was our SQL teacher driving me mad – we ended up rebelling, since I wasn’t the only one whose misophonia was triggered), and managed to make my
getyourwordsout target by the skin of my teeth and writing on Christmas Eve, after unwrapping presents. I signed up again, but with giving myself permission to fail terribly this time because of the exams.
► I got some lovely gifts from fandom this year, including paid time and holiday cards from
holiday_wishes (thank you, everyone!) and a wonderful Yuletide gift that was exactly what I was craving after season 3:

Snowflake Challenge #15: Predictions
2023-01-29 07:57 pm![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, opine on the future of fandom.
So, this is a bit difficult for me, since I haven’t really had my finger anywhere near the pulse of fandom in over a decade, and I’ve happily been doing my own thing at the fringes every since, but I’ll give it a try.
1. Fandom will continue to mostly congregate around franchises and/or remakes. This is partly due to the fact that genuinely original canons seem to get more and more rare these days, but also due to the fact that the built-in sense of community an existing fandom provides helps organise people.
2. East Asian live action canons are going to increase in popularity. This is going to happen in bursts, whenever there’s a new canon coming out that hits the nerve of fandom, as has happened in the last couple of years. Western producers are going to try to cash in on the hype and miserably fail to adapt one of these canons in a western way at least once, because they don’t get why people love the original in the first place.
3. At some point, the social media fandom sphere might collapse or at least diminish because the business model of social media is going to come into conflict with political and legal realities around the globe, such as consumer protection laws, worker protection laws, laws against certain types of hate speech and so on – and managing those types of requirements would require more money than the advertising-based business model brings in (and no, algorithms aren’t going to solve the problem because they’re not good enough to keep pace with humans yet.)
Take all of these with a huge grain of salt because I’m shit at predicting stuff, and also, things might turn out very differently if there’s a war with China.
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, Talk about your favorite trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.
Oh, which ones to choose…
Star Crossed Lovers: I love myself some juicy, juicy drama, so this trope is pretty much catnip for me. I don’t need a happy end – in fact, if everything goes wrong, that’s often even better. My problem with the trope is mostly twofold. 1) I often end up being more invested in the super special protagonist’s parents who had this type of love story and 2) people keep advertising something as fitting this trope when it really doesn’t apply/only applies to already dead and/or minor characters.
A Count of Monte Cristo type revenge story: I love long, elaborate revenge plans against people who definitely deserve it, complicated by the fact that it unfortunately also affects people who don’t suck, and the moral dilemmas that leads to for the main character. Bonus points if the main character ends up falling in love with one of the people he/she tries to harm in the course of their revenge.
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.
I wrote a fic! Well, a longfic, I write other kinds of fic pretty often, so that’s not news. But this one is 77k, which dwarfs any of the other fics I’ve finished so far, the longest of which is 24k. I’ve drafts that are longer, but the really difficult part for me is finishing those drafts and then polishing them up a little.
Of course, the fic hasn’t been posted yet because it really needs a beta, and since it’s for Carnival Row, my chances of finding someone who can check for more than SPAG is pretty low. So, it’s up to anyone’s guess if I’ll ever publish the fic, but even if I don’t, I finally have a longfic to read in a fandom that has zero.
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt.
1. A favorite character
Cassian Andor: I really love him, because he isn’t your typical Star Wars hero type. He is pretty understated, and I really liked that they explored that in the new TV series. Especially in the Narkina 5 arc.
2. Something that makes you laugh:
Whenever I realise how well my cat has trained me.
3. A bookshelf
( A picture of (part of my) bookshelves )
4. A game or hobby you enjoy:
Stardew Valley: It’s one of my favourite games, and playing it is always very soothing. Steam tells me I’ve spent over 750 hours playing it and that surprised even me.
5. Something you find comforting
Time to repost this link to a video of my cat: https://youtu.be/kdSpywjH_3Q
The floof is not a trap, by the way.
6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch
Since I’ve already recced Carnival Row earlier, Warrior (the TV series from 2019). It kind of flew under the radar a lot because it started out on a streaming service nobody knows, but it’s really good! It’s the adaptation of a concept by Bruce Lee, so lots of martial arts, set in 19th century San Francisco.
7. A piece of clothing you love
My Game of Thrones sweater. Because it’s the warmest piece of clothing I own, apart from that one onesie that I can’t wear outdoors.
8. A thing from an old fandom
A Rose of Versailles box set – not pictured on the shelf linked above
9. A thing from a new fandom
Well, relatively new: The World of Ice and Fire, in the top right corner of the photo.
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon.
In Rogue One: Cassian and Jyn kiss, either on the elevator or when they die. It totally happened off-screen and I won’t hear otherwise. (Okay, that last bit was half a joke. But only half.)
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, Scream Into the Void. Get it all out.
This is kind of hard for me, because I tend to prefer not to vent, but there is one thing that frustrates me about fandom-as-a-whole: the more time marches on, the less accessible it becomes, for me at least.
So, I’ve got sociophobia – actual, diagnosed sociophobia. It’s gotten a lot better. Ten years ago, I couldn’t leave the house or phone anyone, and I can do that without much of a problem nowadays. I’m never going to like it, but I can manage. Unfortunately, other aspects haven’t gotten better: I still can’t stand chats, or basically any form of fandom interaction that relies on timely replies. I just need time to prepare myself to be social online, and sometimes I’m going to be really late – if that isn’t okay, community-wise, I’m just not going to be there at all. Discord, Twitter, even platforms like Tumblr, all move so much faster, and that just makes them impossible for me. (Besides some other issues.)
I just wish things were different, you know?
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.
Okay, it was really hard to choose which of my fandoms to advertise, since almost all of them are tiny, but for this post, I’m going with Carnival Row, since the next season is finally going to come out next month.
What is Carnival Row: It’s an eight-episode (so far) TV series by Amazon which focusses on Inspector Rycroft Philostrate, a policeman in The Burgue, a city that finds itself an unwilling refuge for fantasy creatures of many different kinds, leading to all the usual tensions between the newcomers and the humans. The plot kicks off when Philo’s old flame arrives in the city as a refugee and Philo gets drawn into the investigation of a series of murders that is far more dangerous than it seems at first.
Why you should watch Carnival Row:
- Philo (as played by a scruffy Orlando Bloom) is an A+ stoic woobie.
- The world building is really interesting, even if a lot of it is only touched on in passing. It’s a fantasy series, but it focusses on a London-inspired city circa 1900.
- some wonderful minor storylines that get some screen time, such as the cross-species romance between an upper-class lady and a faun, an actor and his troupe of kobold actors, and the Chancellor’s disappointment of a son getting some development.
- Not (just) your usual fantasy creatures: it’s fairies, fauns, centaurs and giant trolls, and unlike with other storylines about oppression and fantasy races, the other races’ differences don’t pose an inherent threat to the humans at all (which can sometimes make it seem as if the oppression is justified).
- A solid mystery that I, at least, found rather satisfying.
Challenge #13: In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.
I think my favourite fandom memory is probably my first Yuletide. Back then, in 2009, I was still pretty uncertain when it came to writing in English, but I really wanted fic for my rare fandoms, and I thought other people might be desperate enough to put up with my not-that-flawless writing because they were equally desperate. Also, I already had sociophobia and my mental health was pretty bad back then, so I was Nervous, to say the least.
Anyway, the writing part went surprisingly well, all things considered. So that’s not really what made that Yuletide special for me. What made it special for me was that I just wouldn’t get a gift. At all. I went to bed on Christmas Eve, afraid that I would be holding up reveals, and really, really, REALLY nervous. Then I woke up on Christmas morning, and there were SIX. They were all good, covering all my requests, and one was really long too! Fandom really came through for me that day, which is why it’s still my favourite exchange memory.

Snowflake Challenge #8: Success
2022-01-15 06:15 pmChallenge #8: In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year
For me personally, 2021 didn’t actually suck. Shocker, I know, but neither did 2020. Guess I’m just good at pandemics. Anyway, I actually did a couple of things that I’d count as a personal win, but I’m going to mention the one I’m most proud, which I already mentioned in an earlier post. I hit my GYWO target! 75K a year might not sound like a lot to a lot of people, but for me, it is.
For those who don’t know:
getyourwordsout is a community that offers you a yearly writing commitment. There’s several pledges (habit – where you sign up to write a certain number of days – and word count, where 75k is the lowest level) and you check in once a month with your progress. It was actually really helpful in getting me working on stuff, not all of which was published. And this year’s sign-ups are still open for one or two more days (time zones can be confusing and I don’t want to math right now), so if this sounds like your thing, try it! The worst that can happen is that you don’t make your target, which is probably what’s already happening anyway.

1.
fail_fandomanon: Yes, I know. But for someone for whom basically all current fandom platforms just don’t work, I’ve found it’s the best place to keep up to date with fandom, especially when it comes to exchanges. And occasionally, you have really great conversations there.
2. Reddit: If you’re into fandom discussion that has less to do with fic and shipping and more to do with world building, your fandom’s Reddit might not be the worst choice. It depends a lot on the fandom, of course. But I’ve found that some of the best discussions for my otherwise silent fandoms can be had there.
3. Wookiepedia: Look, the Star Wars universe is just too big for me to wrap my mind around. I use other fandom wikis as well, of course, and appreciate all the effort people put into them, but I chose to link Wookiepedia as an example because it seriously takes the cake. AWOIAF takes second place, with its many notes on calculating characters’ ages and the chronology.

Challenge #5: In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.
It’s hard to chose an idea here. I’m good at having ideas. I want to do a lot of different projects. But I guess I’ll choose the one thing: my chronic inability to finish a novel-length fic. I’m great at starting them. I’ve started about ten in earnest, not counting the attempts that stalled at one or two chapters. The longest so far has reached a mind-boggling 130k and is still nowhere near finished, and I doubt I’ll ever get around to it. It’s not that I don’t have the energy (which I blamed it on for the longest time), the talent or the time. I just… get distracted. That’s it really. I’ll just come up with a new idea, watch a new series, etc. before I’m finished with a project.
So, here’s a small selection of fic I started:

2022-01-07 04:04 pmChallenge #4: In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.
1. I just want Carnival Row to have a fandom. Any fandom, I don’t even care if it’s relevant to my interest. Even the person who keeps posting wacky AUs that are very much not my thing makes me feel less lonely, just by posting.
2. I wish it were easier to find a beta, so if you’re up to it, join
betaplease, make a ff.net beta profile or respond to requests you see elsewhere. Or check out my Looking for a Beta post (there’s currently only a Musketeers fic on it.)
3. Is there a DW comm for Korean dramas? Or any place that’s free and asynchronous where you can discuss Korean dramas like an adult?
