Snowflake Challenge #5: The White Whale

Challenge #5: In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

It’s hard to chose an idea here. I’m good at having ideas. I want to do a lot of different projects. But I guess I’ll choose the one thing: my chronic inability to finish a novel-length fic. I’m great at starting them. I’ve started about ten in earnest, not counting the attempts that stalled at one or two chapters. The longest so far has reached a mind-boggling 130k and is still nowhere near finished, and I doubt I’ll ever get around to it. It’s not that I don’t have the energy (which I blamed it on for the longest time), the talent or the time. I just… get distracted. That’s it really. I’ll just come up with a new idea, watch a new series, etc. before I’m finished with a project.

So, here’s a small selection of fic I started:

• Aegon and Rhaenys Targaryen survive AU (that’s the 130k one)
• Jon Snow goes to King’s Landing AU
• Game of Thrones Modern!AU set in a modern Westeros
• Ned Stark time travel/reincarnation AU
• Cassian Andor as a Jedi AU
• Jyn was adopted by the Organas AU
• Carnival Row AU where Absalom Breakspear survives (the latest one, which I last worked on in October)

I would say having too many ideas is a nice problem to have, but mostly because it's not my current problem, so I look longingly at it. I imagine it looks much different on your side. ♥ ♥

Yeah, not having any ideas sucks too - it's what happens to me when I'm on the wrong meds, so I know what you're talking about. The grass is always greener, I suppose.

Oooh The White Whale is the perfect metaphor for this challenge! And I am impressed by your large number of long fics! Ever tried to finish them for Nanowrimo? There are so many inspiring pep talks about just getting to the work of writing then but I have to admit that I always get scared off by the idea of writing a minimum amount per day! 😅

I have tried finishing them during NaNo, and I've managed to "win" several times as well. My problem is that the pace with NaNo is just too long to finish a decent longfic, and it doesn't jive well with the fact that I like to write WIPs by hand. Plus, I tend to get way, way, way too rambly during NaNo.

130k! omg. that's a lot of story! i would've gotten distracted long before that, so you should pat yourself on the back for writing that much. seriously. but at the same time, i totally feel you on wanting to write a novel but being tempted away by something new before you can finish it.

It is a lot of story, which is why I'm so bummed I managed to get sidetracked by other stuff. I usually get distracted far earlier in the writing process, though. Around the 20k mark, normally.
