Snowflake Challenge #9: Something to be proud of

snowflake_challenge: Challenge #9:
In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

I wrote a fic! Well, a longfic, I write other kinds of fic pretty often, so that’s not news. But this one is 77k, which dwarfs any of the other fics I’ve finished so far, the longest of which is 24k. I’ve drafts that are longer, but the really difficult part for me is finishing those drafts and then polishing them up a little.

Of course, the fic hasn’t been posted yet because it really needs a beta, and since it’s for Carnival Row, my chances of finding someone who can check for more than SPAG is pretty low. So, it’s up to anyone’s guess if I’ll ever publish the fic, but even if I don’t, I finally have a longfic to read in a fandom that has zero.

I think so too! Especially since I usually write a couple of thousand words at most.

Thanks! And yeah, finishing is somehow the hardest part. Starting a fic is sooo easy, but getting to the end...

It was definitely a marathon - I committed to working the story, at least a little bit, every. Single. Day. That seems to be the way those longfic bunnies get written, at least for me.

And I'd be super thrilled if you betaed. I can wait for as long as I have to - it's not as if I would be doing anything else with the story in the meantime. If you want to know a bit more about it, I've got it listed on my "looking for a beta" post (the second pinned post on my journal).

I don't think it has to be every day, necessarily, but just consistently, no excuses when you're "just not feeling it" or something like it, plus not too much time between bursts of writing so that you don't forget where you were in the story and what you wanted to do with it.

Hmm, that's close to what I'm planning on doing, sort of. The thing is, I'm a writer by day as well, so by the end of a weekday, I'm usually out of most of my creativity. So I've decided to basically outline the hell out of my ideas during the week and then to write from the outline on the weekends, starting with smaller fic ideas or scenes and to build things up, as it were. I've yet to see if that works, though :)

Congrats! That is a lot of words for sure. Finishing and editing can be a struggle so go you for completing something that long! :D

Great job! 77k is truly impressive, and more so when it's for a fandom that has little or no engagement.

Honestly, smaller fandoms might make it easier for me to write more - in longer ones, it's so easy to get lost in all the fic, and sometimes you get discouraged because someone else did the same premise, only better than you (think you) can do it.

Plus, if you write what you want to read, you're extra motivated when there's nothing to read to distract you from writing.

that's... a long fic. congrats on finishing it! i have that problem too - if i don't have a deadline there's a 99.44% chance i'll never finish. so even if your fic isn't ready to post, it's still done, and that's pretty fabulous.

Well, in fandom you sometimes get people who don't think a story is really long unless it breaks 100k, but it is pretty long, especially when you're used to writing (and plotting) shorter stuff. And definitely word on the deadline... if I don't have one, I get distracted so easily...
