On Monday, I lightly hit the door of a closed cabinet in the cupboard in my third room, and it just fell to my feet. After recovering from the bafflement I checked the opposite side and found that door was only hanging on one hinge, too. At first I assumed the screws had gotten lose over the years - I bought the thing from the appartment's previous owner - but upon closer inspection it turned out a previously covered up part of the hinge was made of plastic which had broken through. Joy.
I am not really seeing myself repairing this, I think it would need more hands than two, and drilling new holes into the fake wood. I am not particularly attached to that cupboard either, it is obviously not the fanciest quality, and it would probably be a good idea to get something else instead of investing work in it in case this is the start of it collapsing altogether (I checked of course, the relevant parts for all else seem to be metal). Sigh. I very much do not want to start looking for furniture.
So for now, I just removed the second door, too, and am now waiting for them to grow feet and go to the cellar on their own. To have something nicer to look at in it, I swapped the collected stationary in it with the collected photo boxes, which I had actually wanted to live there recently but then found couldn't because two of the boxes were a few millimetres too big for the doors still to close, a problem that has now removed itself. ;-) As it still has a bit of a "doors missing"-look, I made a light chain to kind of frame the cabinet:

close-up, turned off )

I made the mistake last week to declare myself fit for work too early - there currently is so much going on and being decided and changed that I really wanted to be present. Then I started to cough and generally became even more sick than I had been. Joy. So now I am probably out of order longer than I had been if I had just stayed on the couch one or two more days. I am now somewhat paranoid that I won't get well enough in time to see the Drei Fragezeichen movie one more time at the cinema, although that is probably silly, it seems to be successfull and I am definitely on the way to recovery now.

My phone declared yesterday that it wished to update to IOS 26.2.1 overnight, but it turns out it didn't. I have no idea why. It seems my possessions have decided to annoy me just so I don't get too relaxed with my cold on the couch. ;-)

Edited to add: I have taped the light chain in place in the mean time and now the cabinet has a "doors missing with light chain"-look, so it may end up living somewhere else.

Barstool Sports Canada reports that Montreal Metros captain Shane Hollander has started learning Russian from new teammate and Russian rookie Sergei Dovonchezky.

Ilya has some thoughts. None of them are particularly kind.

Seasonal cards 2025

The usual sample of some of my seasonal cards. Hopefully they've all arrived by now, or will very soon. This year I decided to paint people freehand (which means they're all a bit wonky) and then name them after less well known minor deities - it's called the Small Gods series. I had fun, anyway - it's always good to get back into watercolours again (although I use them more like gouache), after mostly working in Procreate the rest of the year. Embellished with metallic paint in various colours, gold, and silver, for a festive touch. Hopefully you can see the sheen a little in the way I've photographed them.

By this point, I've stopped even pretending to think about other fandoms. Have ten more tiny Goes Wrong Show ficlets for the [community profile] threesentenceficathon. Most of these are actually three sentences, at least!

Assorted ficlets for the Goes Wrong Show, mainly Chris and Robert, 1,100 words total. )

Poking through bits of the script for the stage version of Peter Pan Goes Wrong, I was intrigued to discover one particular tiny segment. Robert, playing Nana the dog, is trapped in the dog door, meaning he's nowhere near the human characters when they start complaining that he's getting fur on them. Naturally, they come up with the sanest possible solution:

Chris: Oh, you useless animal! You've got dog hairs all over my trousers!
(He goes over to Robert and rubs his trousers over him.)
Sandra: Silly hound! You've got hair all over everyone.
(They all rub themselves on Robert.)

Tragically, this did not make it into the television cut! HOWEVER, I'm delighted to find there is a three-second 'Robert on his hands and knees while Sandra rubs herself against his beard' clip from rehearsals floating around, which you can find here on Tumblr if you're as normal about Robert Grove as I am.

I am talking a lot about Team 8 members recently because there were a lot of Team 8 members to talk about. An original member of the team, recruited to represent Kochi Prefecture, Hirose Natsuki auditioned for AKB48 in 2014 and debuted alongside her peers, Abe Mei, Okabe Rin, Okubora Chinatsu, Nagano Serika, Fujimura Natsuki, Onishi Momoka, Kuranoo Narumi, Shitao Miu, Cho Kurena, Hamamatsu Riona, Fukuchi Rena, Honda Hitomi, Yokomichi Yuri, the other Yokoyama Yui, Yoshino Miyu, Oda Erina, Oguri Yui, Yoshikawa Nanase, and Hayasaka Tsumugi. She was on stage during the revival of PARTY ga Hajumaru yo during Team 8's "business trip" to the SKE48 theatre and went on to perform in Nagasaki and Hokkaido during the Team 8 National Tour 〜47 no Suteki na Machi e〜 2015. During PARTY, she shared the stage with Nanase for performances of Hoshi no Ondo, and in Nagasaki, she performed Nageki no Figure, whilst in Hokkaido, she was in the lineup for Blue Rose, a song I always approach with caution and reverie, such is its significance.

Towards the end of 2014, Nacchan began to appear on B sides, firstly the Team 8 theme tune for which their later tour was named, 47 no Suteki na Machi e, a song that made it to the number #1 spot during Request Hour in 2019, just in case you had any doubt as to how significant Team 8 were, and began to make her appearances on successive singles after, all the way up to High Tension. Friends, I don't often get hit with stirrings of fond feelings about a country and its national identity, but 47 no Suteki na Machi e is one of those moments where I really think about how many places on this island nation half the world away I have grown fond of. I know, I know, yes, I am a massive weeb.

In 2015, like other members of her team, she went on to appear in performances of the Aitakatta revival before Team 8 went on tour, continuing her duties on stage all the way through to 2017 when she first announced her impending graduation, and finally, in March of the following year, when Team 8 came full circle with a further revival of PARTY and Nacchan graduated.

Whilst a member of AKB48, I didn't follow Nacchan. In many ways, working on these Team 8 profiles for this silly little Wednesday column that has gone on far too long already and really needs an index post—working on these entries has been a chance for me to get to know many of the unsung heroines of Team 8, a chance to celebrate them. Reading about Nacchan's life, about how she used to cycle two hours there and back to school, about how, whilst in elementary school, she participated in a Yosakoi festival, a celebration of particular form of dance native to Kochi, all of this fills me with a kind of wonder. Underestimating the determination of young girls really is a grave mistake.

Even after graduation, in 2019, during Team 8's concert in Osaka on the cusp of their six-year anniversary, Nacchan returned to stand on stage with her peers once again.

Moments like this give me hope. I really, really want to believe that we will see a Team 8 reunion again soon, and I really, really hope that the occasion will not be Oguri Yui's graduation. Team 8 means so much to so many people, and I really want them to get their chance to celebrate the way I have been able to celebrate original AKB during the last year.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

I received word today that an old friend from my Sentinel days, Yvonne McCool, passed away last month.

I knew she'd been very ill but it still hits hard to know she's gone.

4. How old is the oldest book you own?

I have Ten of a large series by Dell Shannon. (this author is a woman) They are cop mysteries. I just love them. They are from the 60s so they are dated but still good reading. Wonderful case driven stories. I fell in love with the entire station house. Each book was like watching a great episode on tv. Then I have a set of ten by Ed McBain. It was another series that I loved. They were written in the 60s also. Gosh I was young when I got those books. The next set were from țhe 70s and 80s. His name is Lawrence Sanders. He's my favorite by far.
The First Deadly Sin. (1973)
The Second Deadly Sin (1977)
The Third Deadly Sin (1981)
The Fourth Deadly Sin (1985)
The Sixth Commandment (1978)
The Tenth Commandment (1980)
The Eighth Commandment (1986)
The Seventh Commandment (1980)
I own some cook books that are from the 50s and the 60s. I save books for a long, long time.

How about you? How old are your oldest books?

Log Message:

Add Terraform for ECS infrastructure with single source of truth for workers

  • Add terraform/ directory managing ECS cluster, services, task definitions, load balancers, security groups, and IAM roles
  • Create config/workers.json as single source of truth for worker definitions, shared by Terraform (via jsondecode) and GitHub Actions workflow generator
  • Replace Perl Template Toolkit workflow generator with pure Python script (config/update-workflows.py) - no external dependencies needed
  • Add bin/ecs-shell helper script for listing services and connecting to tasks
  • Add send-email-ses worker that was missing from workflow definitions
  • Update .gitignore to exclude Terraform state files and lock file

The workers.json file defines all worker properties (cpu, memory, category, spot, min/max counts) in one place. To add a new worker: 1. Add entry to config/workers.json 2. Run: terraform apply 3. Run: python3 config/update-workflows.py

Write about an act of kindness that someone did for you that took you by surprise.

For our 55th anniversary, hubby took me out for dinner and told me he got tickets for a cruise to Greece. What a shock. I always wanted to go. My father was Greek and always wanted to go but never got around to it. So, hubby thought it would be nice if my dad could see it through our eyes. My dad died 14 years ago. It was sweet and loving that hubby did that. And hubby made it a wonderful trip. We've been so blessed.
