Hedgehog Update

One week and 80(!) grams later, our rescue hoglet Zumi (name for administrative purposes) is doing well. She's a lot livelier and not happy about being stuck in boxes all the time, but her eyes look better, she's no longer dehydrated, and she gained a lot of weight. Still over 200g to go, but so far she's doing pretty well.

We're glad too! A new, bigger box just arrived for her, which she'll hopefully enjoy.

She is adorable. Did you get any fleas? I've been afflicted a few times and it's no fun.

Is it just cat food or does she get other stuff as well? Will she spend the winter with you or is she supposed to go outside for hibernation purposes when she gained the weight?

She had fleas, but so far, they've not bothered anyone else - apparently, hedgehog fleas are very species-specific. Shame the same can't be said about dog fleas. My mother once had to have the house fumigated because she had visited her friend who wasn't able to take care of her dog properly and the fleas hitched a ride. I think she still has flea bite scars from it.

She only gets cat food (of the specific kinds she's allowed), mostly because she doesn't like egg, unlike most hedgehogs. If all goes well, she'll hibernate with us, and then we'll help her get a proper start in spring.

We had a bit of a scare on Sunday, but she seems to have mostly recovered now, so fingers crossed she'll keep doing well.
