[personal profile] rodo
first off, I hope you’re going to have fun writing for me and that this letter helps. I’d also like to say that I’d like fic for all the characters/pairings/fandoms I’m requesting here, whether it follows my prompts or not. If you have an idea that you absolutely want to write about these characters and it doesn’t go against my DNWs, feel free to write it. And if you think you have a better idea than me (which is quite likely) the same applies.

My AO3 Name: [archiveofourown.org profile] Rodo

General Do Not Wants:

  • detailed depictions of depression and alcoholism
  • a story being in both first person and present tense
  • unrequested non-canonical pairings for canon characters
  • setting AUs (like coffeeshop!AUs or space!AUs)
  • Korean speech patterns in English stories. By that I mean use of honorifics (-sshi, -nim), stuff like eomma and hyung, job titles, the use of names when a pronoun would usually be used in English, vocative markers (-(y)ah) or subject markers (-i(e) being the one I usually come across in fic). I am fine with Korean name order, since that is also used in English.
  • character/relationship studies

General Likes:

  • stories with a similar tone and theme as canon
  • casefic
  • plotty fics in general
  • complicated interpersonal relationships
  • nuanced friendships and family relationships
  • post-canon fic
  • canon-divergence AUs
  • pining and slow burn
  • deep passion or devotion (to a person or a cause)
  • action/adventure, heists and cons
  • humour
  • worldbuilding

Also, while I do not prompt for smut, I would absolutely be happy to receive it! I just don’t know how to prompt for it…

Now for the canons:

Carnival Row (TV)

Canon-specific DNW: an AU where Philo has wings

So, first of all, generally, when it comes to this fandom I’m really happy about any fic that does some worldbuilding about more or less any aspect of canon – the war, the realms of the fae and fauns, interspecies relations between different types of fae, culture (of the humans and non-humans), biology… I want to read people’s takes on all of it. I’m also open to any non-nominated canon character to make an appearance, as well as canon pairings (with a caveat that I don’t want to see Vignette and Philo get broken up), and of course feel free to mix and match the requested characters if the story calls for it. Now, for the requests specifically:

Afissa: I really like Afissa as a character, not so much despite her being rather unremarkable, but because of it. I’d love to read about her experience fitting into the society of the Burgue, how she relates to other fauns (considering she wasn’t born in the homeland), and her (presumably sometimes) complicated feelings for the Spurnroses (father, son and daughter). And, of course I’d like to see what happens to her after her whole life gets turned upside down and she’s interned in the Row. Really, I’m mostly interested in her “normal” point of view at what’s happening around her.

Madame Moira: So, Moira is a bit of a cypher as a character. We know she owns the Tetterby, and that she’s old friends with Runyan. I’d like to know more about it. How did she build her life in The Burgue? How does she navigate what must be frequent interactions with the police, anti-fae protesters, angry wives and unruly customers? How did she get to know Runyan? Did they use to be a thing? Did she know Philo’s mother? And how does she live up to what’s coming? Who was she before she came to The Burgue?

Madame Moira and Tourmaline Larou: In this case, I’m interested in both shippy and non-shippy fic! How did they meet? Was Tourmaline indentured to her or did Moira get her out of whatever situation Tourmaline found herself in after she came to The Burgue? Evenings (or in their case probably early mornings) together after they’re done with work, gossiping and missing home/friends. And maybe they’ll grow closer to each other after Tourmaline has finally worked out her thing with Vignette.

Portia Fyfe: Portia is probably not the best-liked character in fandom, but I actually like her, and I’d love to see more of her grappling with either her role in society (and the expectations certain men have when it comes to widows) as well as her fae-phobia. Maybe she’ll try to make up for what she’s done post-season 1 and ends up running into Philo again, or maybe just OCs that make her slowly question her bigotry. Maybe she ends up becoming friends (and maybe more) with Berwick, because he grapples with something similar.

Sophie Longerbane: Sophie is such an enjoyable character! She’s super smart, and also slightly mad, and watching her manipulate the people around her is always a treat. I also love her twisted relationship with Jonah, so more of that is always welcome too, of course. As is her sitting in her web like a spider, or pre-canon fic exploring just how she became such a messed up person. I’d also love to see her try to match her wits with someone who is on her level, although I can’t quite think of someone who would be (well, Runyan, maybe).

Tourmaline Larou: Tourmaline is one of my favourite characters in the series, and I just want more of her. More of her adventures in The Burgue before Vignette got there (Philo optional), an AU where Philo and Vignette manage to leave the city just in time and Tourmaline is left dealing with the fallout alone, an answer to the question of how she got to know the Raven, and just generally her adventures.

Tourmaline Larou and Vignette Stonemoss: I’m happy with either their friendship post-break-up or their relationship before. How did they get to be friends? Why didn’t they work out as a couple? I’d love epistolary fic from after they parted, working out their issues through letter while there’s a war going on. Or them having a girl’s night in/out together, either back home or as friends in The Burgue.

Vignette Stonemoss: With Vignette, I’d also like to see her have more of her own adventures, especially filling the gap between her being left alone and the beginning of the series. What is sparrowhawking like? I’d love to see her save some people from the Pact. I’d love to get glimpses of what occupied Anoun is like through her eyes. If you’re more comfortable writing about her in The Burgue, I’d absolutely enjoy some more adventures with the Raven post-season 1 too!

The Fall of the Gas-Lit Empire – Rod Duncan

Requested Characters/Groups: Elizabeth Barnabus, Julia Swain, Elizabeth Barnabus and Julia Swain

First of all: I nominated the first trilogy on purpose. I read the second one and liked it just fine, so feel free to set something during or after it if you prefer it, but it’s far from necessary. I’m more attached to the English setting and supporting cast we see there, and am perfectly happy to disregard the second trilogy, if you haven’t read it.

First of all: I ship both of them, so if you want to write femslash about these two, go for it! If you do, I would prefer you just ignore that their canon love interests are their canon love interests– they’re free to show up in fic, though, and I don’t mind the romance being mentioned in gen fic. I really want fic about these two. I really, really loved their friendship and want to see more of it – maybe from Julia’s point of view, for once. I would love to see them work together on a case. I would love to see Julia (and maybe her family) support Elizabeth while she’s on the run. I would love for them to have an argument over something and make up in the end. Maybe they go somewhere with Elizabeth crossdressed, either as part of a case or as a date.

But of course, I’m also interested in seeing what they get up in their own time. How do Julia’s studies go? How did her romance happen? How do her parents react to her being friends with Elizabeth? Maybe she tries to do some sleuthing on her own, without Elizabeth?

As for Elizabeth: What is it like to raise a semi-feral runaway? Something more about her relationship with Farthing, because that really needed a bit more work in canon. A missing scene from The Custodian of Marvels, which I enjoyed the most.

설강화 | Snowdrop (TV)

Something I’d like for this fandom in general, combined with all prompts: character death fix-its for more or less anyone: Soo-ho, of course, but also Gyeok-chan, Eun-cheol, Yeong-u or even Man-dong, if you think it would make for a better story! And of course all the Canon Divergence AUs!

Gye Bun-ok: What I really like about her character is the amount of resentment she has in her against absolutely everyone, and how that turns her into a bit of an arse. I love her trying to claw her way to the life she dreams of and would love to see more of that, all the petty meanness included. I ship her with Gyeok-chan, so feel free to include that as well, even if it’s just a missing scene, or Bun-ok helping to save his life in some way (maybe even inadvertently.)

Gye Bun-ok and Pi Seung-hee: I absolutely loved both of them and their complicated relationship and issues. Some ideas on what to write: something that explores how they got from the secret reveal to their last scene together • them running the dorm together from an outsider perspective • post-canon fic about a slice-of-life type low stakes problem in the dorm

Jang Han-na: As with Cheong-ya, I want to see more of her as a spy, but in her case I also want to see her fight against her father and the ANSP’s disregard for women to be the best spy she can be. I loved the glimpses we got of her being a kind of cold-hearted evil spy pre-canon. And I’d love to see more of her and Gang-mu working out how their lives together will work out – working together and dating each other and all that.

Jang Han-na and Kang Cheong-ya: These two were a treat together in canon, and I’d love to see the two of them be forced to work together again (Gang-mu optional). I like how antagonistic they are, but also how they are both professional enough to work really well together. Or maybe they end up on opposite sides again, maybe with Cheong-ya working as a mercenary of sorts (in which case, I’d prefer both of them to come out of it alive). Maybe they end up trapped together for a night and have to work together and also endure each other’s company.

Kang Cheong-ya: I’m not too hot on the love angle for her in canon, but I absolutely adored her being a badass spy! So, anything that focusses on that: some pre-canon spy shenanigans • seducing her marks • her having settled down with a family post-canon and her past getting in the way • saving her comrades’ families • an AU where she manages to keep Man-dong from killing the others or one where she saves Soo-ho one last time (main character death of Cheong-ya optional, so long as it’s all about her/from her POV)

Pi Seung-hee: She was one of my favourites in the show, and what I loved about her the most was her protecting the girls in her charge. How often has she run interference with the ANSP? How often has she covered something up before? How often has she turned a blind eye? And how often has she done something subtle to prevent other girls from falling into the hands of the ANSP? And how often has she failed? Feel free to let yourself be inspired by The Lives of Others – or straight up go meta and have her watch the movie and be interviewed about her own, similar experiences eventually.

Warrior (TV 2019)

What I like about all the female characters on this show is that they all live in a world that wants to keep them down, and they all make their way in this world in some way. I also like that they’re all flawed, that they fight with each other as much as against the world and that all their relationships are relatively complicated. I like all their canon pairings, so feel free to include them, if you want to!

Ah Toy:With Ah Toy, I’m interested in two different things: her relationships with other people, like friendships (Ah Sahm, Wang Chao), mentor/mentee relationships like the one with Lai or an OC prostitute, or her kind of antagonistic relationship with Mai Ling (and, of course, her relationship with Nellie, see below). But I’m also all for her schemes to get rich and accumulate property through dubious means, and for her vigilantism and how she decides who to target and who not to. I’d also like some elaboration on her backstory, based on what she tells Nellie.

Ah Toy and Nellie Davenport: hurt/comfort with Nellie taking care of Ah Toy, who is not a very good patient • a five times fic about people finding out they’re in a relationship • making plans for helping others and working on them together • fluff on the vineyard

Mai Ling: I love just how mean and ambitious Mai Ling is. My favourite relationship for her is probably her destructive one with Ah Sahm (destructive more to everyone around them than to her), closely followed to her twisted lady/knight thing with Li Yong (feel free to write porn if you want to). But I’d also like to see her compete/cooperate with Ah Toy, and I’d absolutely love to read about a scheme related to Buckley. Or a scheme to make herself de-facto queen of Chinatown that maybe doesn’t work out quite as she wants it to.

Nellie Davenport: I’d really love to see more of Nellie navigating different worlds, like the vinyard, Chinatown with Ah Toy and high society as a wealthy widow. I’d like to see her fight against Buckley, help people and just generally see something about the early days of her activism.

Penelope Blake: So, Penny really got the shit end of the stick in the second season, so I’d like something a bit more hopeful for her: getting out of the asylum, making up with Ah Sahm and/or Sophie, or getting the better of Buckley (maybe with Mai Ling’s help). I’m also interested in how her friendship with Jacob developed and how they got to be close while there’s also a class/race gap between them.

Penelope Blake and Sophie Mercer: For these two, I’d love to see something that builds on the character development Sophie got in the season. I’d love to see her face having to deal with taking over the business and trying to save her sister. Maybe she teams up with Ah Sahm or Nellie to save her?

Sophie Mercer: I think it’s pretty obvious that Sophie considers herself the rebellious one, and I’d really like to see more of her growing up and realising that that attitude is only going to take her so far. I’m also interested in seeing what she comes up with post-season 2. How could she channel her rebellious energy in a more productive (or at least less self-sabotaging) manner?
