A Prickle of Hedgehogs, And Other News

So, Zumi got released on schedule, and promptly disappeared into the night. We don’t know for sure how she’s doing, but we have seen a hedgehog roughly her size after. Plus, my mother, giant animal lover that she is, puts out food for them in a special rat-proof hedgehog feeding house (the rats, as our neighbour finally admitted a month after my mother got a huge scare, are not our fault). Then, yesterday evening at dusk, I spotted a hedgehog on the lawn when my cat stared at it. So we went out to check if it was going into the house. It wasn’t, we were too fast and it was hiding in the ivy, but then I noticed the smacking sound coming from the house and ’lo and behold, a humongous hedgehog was happily munching away. And then I noticed a suspicious molehill that hadn’t been on the lawn seconds earlier that was roughly Zumi-sized. So yeah, we appear to have not one hedgehog, but a whole prickle of them.

As for writing, I mentioned that I was giving myself permission not to meet my getyourwordsout target this year, and I’m still planning on doing that. But May was the first one where I met my target – a combination of fandom5k and a drawerfic set in a tiny fandom that my brain wants to write for reasons unknown to me – and that’s making me happy!

I also posted a photo in common_nature in an attempt to come out of my shell a little bit. For some reason, posting in communities always scares me, even after almost twenty years on LJ, IJ and DW.

Hedgehog friends!! Delighted Zumi continues to be doing well :)

Hedgehogs are solitary, so I doubt they're as happy about it! But we're pretty happy they're all doing great.

Wir hatten auch einmal eine Igeldame über den Winter. Sie war so klein, dass Winterschlaf keine Option war, also hat sie uns abends immer Gesellschaft geleistet. Sie wurde unheimlich zutraulich, man musste beim Füttern aber immer aufpassen, weil sie gnadenlos zugebissen hat, und dann die Gefahr bestand, dass sie nicht nur den Mehlwurm erwischt. ;)

Jedenfalls haben wir sie im Frühjahr bei Bekannten im Garten ausgesetzt, wo sie noch etliche Jahre lebte. Ihr Lieblingsgeruch war auch bei uns immer schon Kaffee. Igel "erbeißen" sich ja Gerüche und schmieren sich dann eine Art Schaum auf die Nadeln, so wurde uns das damals erklärt. Die Bekannten haben dann erzählt, dass die Kaffeefilter, die einmal wöchentlich auf den Kompost kamen, am nächsten Tag kreuz und quer im Garten verschleppt waren. XDD Wenn sie abends auf der Terasse saßen, kam die (inzwischen) Große auch immer wieder mal vorbei und hat sich Obst oder so füttern lassen. <3

Das ist nun schon knapp 40 Jahre her, aber sie lebt in all unseren Herzen immer noch weiter. Sie war schon ein ganz spezieller, selbstbewusster Charakter.

Ja, das mit dem Beißen kenne ich auch. Igel sehen natürlich auch nicht so gut und erkunden die Welt auch mit anderen Sinnen.

Euer Igel klingt aber wirklich wie was Besonderes. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass Zumi so viel von ihrer Persönlichkeit ihren Menschen gegenüber offenbart hat. Na ja, die meiste Zeit bei uns hat sie dann ja auch geschlafen - sie war zwar zu Anfang super klein, aber sie ist Weltmeisterin im Gewicht anfuttern und konnte dann doch noch in den Winterschlaf.

It's understandable really how much fic for tiny fandoms never makes it out into the wild!

It's not even because I'm shy or anything - well, I am, but small fandoms are perfect for shy people - it's that I prefer to get my fic betaed if at all possible, and finding a beta is hard enough in fandoms that are medium-sized. Which is why my to-beta list keeps growing, with hardly any fic moving off it, either because it gets betaed or because five years later, I decide it doesn't need one after all.
